Can I Learn How to Sing?

by Oct 4, 2021

BLOG CATEGORY: Singing Lessons

Singing is a learned skill, as every professional singer knows. A singing teacher can give you the exercises you need to overcome your weak points, let your natural singing voice come through, and significantly improve your musicianship. Regardless of where you start, if you put in time and effort by committing to consistent practice, you can learn this skill.

Talent – What is It?

Perhaps you’ve been told that you just don’t have a good singing voice, that you lack the talent for it, that you should give it up. That kind of comment can hurt, but thankfully it’s also untrue. Anyone who tells you something like this is simply not a skilled singing teacher! Whoever told you those things didn’t know how to help you develop your voice and was covering up for that fact by making excuses.

Still, the concept of “talent” holds many people back, so let’s take a closer look at it. I posted an infographic on my social media a while ago, asking whether you’re born with talent or something you develop.

Suppose you think of talent as something you’re born with, with a fixed mindset. In that case, you may be missing out on the opportunity to discover your voice and cultivate musical ability. In the film, Ratatouille, we learn that “anyone can cook.” I believe the same is true about singing. Some people have a natural talent or are lucky enough to have musical parents or be surrounded by music and performances. This is an advantage, but it’s not the end of the story. Lazy prodigies are surpassed by dedicated students; if you work hard, you can erase any alleged “gap” in talent.

You need to think of talent as something you develop with a growth mindset. If you run into criticism, you take that as an opportunity to learn. If you face a challenge, you can rise to meet it because you’re not afraid of failure. Every audition is an opportunity to improve your skills and grow as a performer. If you’re ready to put in the hard work to learn, whether you’re a pro or an amateur, honing your craft with singing lessons is a no-brainer.

Singing is a Skill

Do I believe that you can become a good singer? Most definitely. Even if you’re always going flat, your voice has no power, or you don’t know how to move other people emotionally when you sing a song?

Yes. I do. As a singing teacher, I regularly turn casual singers into compelling public performers – whether their goal is to excel at an audition or stand out from the crowd on karaoke night. Because singing is a skill, and everyone who can talk can learn that skill. Even if you’re starting from the absolute beginning – not knowing how to read sheet music, for instance – you can still learn how to sing.

What if you’re not an experienced singer hoping to move up to another level? Lessons with a skilled singing teacher are still your best bet. A good singing teacher can help you find what your voice does best, improve in the areas where you currently struggle, and teach you how to make your “good days” happen consistently and reliably.

“Can I Learn How to Sing?”

As you can probably guess, my answer to the question “can I learn how to sing?” is always “YES!!!” Book an introductory lesson with a singing teacher and just get started. You’ll be singing beautifully before you know it! You may not feel confident right now, but yes, you can absolutely learn how to sing.
